Violinist, really?

PATRICIA KOPATCHINSKAJA

TIM MUNRO · SEPTEMBER 2017

I’m always on the lookout for practitioners who don’t simply rewrite the rulebook, but set it alight, watch it burn. Moldavian violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja has consummate technique, but she throws it to the wind, exposing classical music’s raw nerve endings. PatKop, as she’s known to fans and collaborators alike, grew up in a household that resounded with folk music, while, early in her career, she developed a commitment to contemporary music. These two influences have fed her openhearted approach to everything she plays. Hear her tear shreds off Stravinsky, recapture the whimsy and extremity of Beethoven, or launch into Jorge Sanchez-Chiong’s astonishing minute-long Crin. PatKop is currently an artistic partner with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and she has her own all-star string quartet, quartet-lab. I’ve been lucky to see her in concert several times, and was left invigorated and inspired. Beg, borrow or buy seats whenever she’s nearby!

Myndmap:

New Music:
Why only play what we know and understand? Better look forward and encounter new things. How thrilling if we do not understand. And what a galaxy of new names: Francesconi, Coll, Turnage, Sanchez-Chiong, Movio, Hersch, Karajev, Salonen, Eötvös, Holliger, van der Aa, Illes, Cattaneo...
Musical partners and friendships:
The partners on stage are by far the most important determinant for a satisfying outcome. I have the privilege of long term collaborations with the pianists Markus Hinterhäuser, Polina Leschenko and Anthony Romaniuk, the Cellists Sol Gabetta and Jay Campbell, the clarinetist Reto Bieri and the singers Ah Young and Anna-Maria Pammer, with the conductors Teodor Currentzis, Péter Eötvös, Iván Fischer, Gustavo Gimeno, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, Heinz Holliger, Kirill Petrenko, Sir Simon Rattle, François-Xavier Roth and many others.
Staged productions:
-"War and Chips"
-"Whats next Vivaldi?"
-"Pierrot lunaire"
-"Cricket and Ant"

(Productions can be adapted to budget, venue and ensemble. Other projects are in preparation).

Camerata Bern

The artistic direction of the Camerata in my hometown is for me a center of my interest. Together with our public we want to explore and discover old and new works and concert forms.

Voice - challenge for a violinist
Ligeti: Mysteries of the Macabre
Schönberg: Pierrot lunaire
Works by Zykan, Jorge Sanchez-Chiong, Michael Hersch and Francisco Coll...
Leading orchestras:
Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Camerata Salzburg, Saint Paul  Chamber Orchestra, Australian Chamber  Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, Staatskapelle  Berlin, Camerata Bern...
Soloist
Concertos by Berg, Eötvös, Hersch, Ligeti, Schönberg need a conductor. But others go better without, e.g. Mozart, Beethoven, Hartmann, Frank Martin, Mansurian etc.
