Beth Robinson runs Rainbow Music Therapy, which offers a wide range of services in the Bay Area, from one-on-one music therapy to group sessions to community-based programs. But I am particularly inspired by her work as a member of a collective of music therapy educators and clinicians called Team Rainbow. With Team Rainbow, she has worked to establish best practices for LGBTQ+ clients. From validating and respecting clients’ self-identification, to learning about LGBTQ+ culture and political history, these practices are meant to expand therapeutic perspectives for this population, and ultimately make mental health workers more effective therapists and educators. If you’re in the arts, chances are that you or someone you know has struggled with coming out or with simply living their life as who they really are. It’s so encouraging to know that that there is specialized care being developed for a community that has only just begun to find its voice.
